Making a Difference in Falmouth

A Marine, a World War II veteran, a widow whose husband served in Vietnam: All were among the 18 Falmouth homeowners whose lives were made better by the 8th Annual Big Fix on September 16, thanks in part to sponsorship by Heroes In Transition (HIT).

The Housing Assistance Corporation’s Big Fix is a day of service aimed at making small home improvements for local veterans, seniors and the disabled in one community each year on Cape Cod. This year, a record 330 volunteers turned out to lend a helping hand in Falmouth.

“There’s no way I could accomplish everything these people are doing today,” said one recipient, citing finances and health. “I just never imagined there would be that many people here.”

In addition to 18 homes, volunteers also beautified the Falmouth Senior Center.

Welcoming the volunteers at breakfast that morning was Cyndy Jones, co-founder of HIT, who afterward visited the volunteers, veterans and the veterans’ families as work on their homes was underway.

“I wouldn’t miss the chance to thank all those people for giving their time and energy to such a much-needed project,” said Jones. “I look forward to it every year.”

As one recipient of home repairs put it, the Big Fix “was more than just help. It was a fabulous display of love and caring and consideration and enthusiasm. Thank you.”
