Heroes In Transition a Recipient of B.A.A. Gives Back Grant

December 1, 2025 (Cape Cod, MA) – Heroes In Transition (HIT) is one of 12 organizations across the Commonwealth to be awarded a B.A.A. Gives Back Grant as part of its fall round of funding.

HIT is receiving a $7,500 grant to support its FIRM (Fitness In Real Motion) program which gives local veterans, service members, and military spouses access to the tools, resources, and education they need to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

Launched in the fall of 2024, FIRM is a six-week program in which participants receive one-on-one consultation with a personal trainer. They also participate in a 15-minute educational class on health-related topics (nutrition, cardiovascular exercises, warm up/cool down exercises, and more) followed by group fitness training.

“The Boston Athletic Association’s contribution will have a profound impact on the lives of those we serve, encouraging them to maintain healthy and active lifestyles,” said HIT Executive Director Silene Gordon. “This partnership is a testament to the B.A.A.’s dedication to our nation’s heroes, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to helping those who are serving and who have served. This support makes a difference, and we look forward to continuing this important work together.”

The Boston Athletic Association is a nonprofit that was established in 1887. It manages the Boston Marathon, and supports comprehensive charity, youth, and year-round programming. In the spring of 2023, it started the B.A.A. Gives Back Grant program. Awards are given to support work that aligns with the association’s mission of promoting a healthy lifestyle through sports, especially running, in order to build healthy communities.

Since its inception, $773,000 has been awarded to 56 organizations across Massachusetts. The 12 recipients of funding this fall were awarded grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000..

“We end the year with 12 selected organizations that we believe will use the funds to do great things to support athletes of all ages in getting and staying active,” said B.A.A. Director of Development Nicole Juri. “The impact of this program is far reaching with 56 organizations receiving grants from us to date, and we look forward to continuing the growth and impact of this program in the years ahead.”

Along with FIRM, HIT works to connect those it serves with the support they need to embrace their health and wellness through REBOOT and REGROUP. These two programs focus on a holistic approach to health through mindfulness, meditation, breathing exercises, reiki, self-care techniques, and connection through a cohort of peers.
