The story is about three children who take a whimsical trip to an island inhabited mostly by grandmothers. The children are transported by a whale, meet a mermaid leading a marching band, and learn about the traditions of other cultures. Most importantly, they learn about the deep love of a grandmother and the special present she gives each of them for Christmas.
